INFOGRAPHIC: Cast Iron Pipe Asset Management
Cast Iron Pipe (CIP) accounts for nearly 40 percent of the water pipes in the United States and are mostly between 50 and 110 years old (source: EPA, 2009). Because of the brittle nature of Cast Iron, these pipes typically crack and leak before they fail and data collected from over 10 years of inline leak detection surveys has found that Cast Iron Pipes have the highest rate of leaks per miles surveyed of any pipe type. Because of how and where it fails, leak detection is an effective and proactive method of condition assessment on Cast Iron pipes.
